What is Lingashtakam?
The Lingashtakam is an invocatory hymn with eight stanzas, comprising eight yugas (ashtakam), those praise the Shiva Linga, the simple abstract image of the god Shiva, an important deity in Hinduism. It reveals the divine aspects of Linga, its cosmic importance, and the benefits of worshipping the Linga.
Meaning and Significance:
Each stanza starts off by extolling one glorious aspect of the Shiva Linga, which it is even adored by Gods, sages and by celestial beings and how it confers salvation.
The recurring chant “Tat pranaamāmi Sadāshiva Lingam” is explained as “I repeatedly bow to that Eternal Shiva Lingam.”
It hails the Linga as the cause and support of creation, the destroyer of sin, and the giver of knowledge, dispassion and eternal bliss.

The Lingashtakam is a Panchakam (having five verses) on Lord Shiva while the Shiva Linga is worshipped as per Indian tradition. Each of its eight verse pays homage to the Linga as the symbol of purity, divine energy and cosmic reality.
If a person chants or has heard this hymn with faith constantly, he shall attain spiritual powers, inner purity and receive divine peace and can be rid of all sins. The salutation “Tat Pranamāmi Sadā Shiva Lingam” repeatedly salutes the immortal divine.
While Lingashtakam sings his glory connecting the soul of the devotee to the formless being of Sadāshiva and helps every believer to lead a life full of moksha.
